SPEEDWAY HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS

It's May in Speedway and while we all know it's a huge month for events at IMS, it's also when things ramp up for the spring sports competitors. For the baseball, softball, and girls tennis teams, their Hoosier Legends Conference finishes are based on head to head competition during the regular season. For the boys and girls track and boys golf teams, their Hoosier Legends Conference rank is based on their performance at a conference meet. The information below includes major comeptitions for each of the spring sports. Boys Golf: The boys program has advanced to the IHSAA Regional competition the last two years. For senior AJ Lund and junior Michael Broida, not only is advancing to the Regional a goal, advancing to the State Finals is also a goal. Speedway finished in third place at Monday's Marion County meet, just eight shots out of first place. Here are the team's big meets in May: Saturday May 9th: Wildcat Invitational at Sultan's Run GC - Jasper, IN Saturday May 16th: Franklin Invitational at the Legends GC - Franklin, IN Monday June 1st: Hoosier Legends Conference Invitational - Sarah Shank GC June 5th, 6th or 8th: IHSAA Sectional at Winding River GC - June 11th or June 12th: IHSAA Regional at Coyote Crossing GC - Lafayette, IN June 16th and June 17th: IHSAA State Finals at Prairie View GC - Carmel, IN Girls Tennis: First year head coach Karly Smith's squad is gaining experience and participated in the WEBO Invitational last weekend. Sophomore Antonella DeRosa is the team's #1 singles player. Monday May 11th: County tournament opening round at Pike Tuesday May 19th-Saturday May 23rd: Ben Davis Sectional - Opponent and time TBD Baseball: Injuries have crept up and the Sparkplugs are slowly coming back from a series of injuries. While the boys only have one HLC win, they picked that win up against conference leader Tri-West on Wednesday. Friday May 8th: County tournament opening round HERE vs. Perry Meridian Wednesday May 27th: Northview Sectional begins on this date and runs through Monday June 1st Softball: The girls host a special event for Speedway Youth Softball tonight when they play WEBO under the lights. They drew Beech Grove in the opening round of the County tourney. The teams split a pair of one run games earlier this season. Friday May 8th: County tournament opening round HERE vs. Beech Grove Monday May 25th: Cascade Sectional begins and runs through Saturday May 30th. Boys and Girls Track: John Thomas (100) and Morgan Smith (3200) have both set school records this season. Thomas qualified for the State finals last year in the 100 and last night at the Golden Bear Invite, Thomas set a school record in the 200 with a time of 22.04. Smith won Sectional races in the 1600 and 3200 as a sophomore, was runner-up in both races as a junior, and expects to be competitive once again this spring. She's also aiming for a trifecta as she is also racing the 800 this spring.
