Speedway's varsity boys soccer team is off to a solid 5-2-2 start at the halfway point of the season. Two of the wins were against ranked teams in the opening week of the season, and two ties came against teams with combined records of 10-4-4. The team's two losses by a combined three goals, came against one of the state's top 2A squads and the defending County tourney champion. In short, Sparkplug soccer is strong. Another test awaits. Class 1A top ranked Covenant Christian (7-0-1) visits Ralph Johnson Field on Tuesday evening. The Warriors edged Speedway 1-0 in last year's matchup and the Sparkplugs are hyped for another crack at their west-side rivals. The JV match will take place at 6 p.m. with the varsity to follow at 7 or shortly after.
